Significant Investment in Hydropower Projects Boosts Energy Prospects in Taplejung
Taplejung district is experiencing a surge in hydropower development, with substantial investments pouring into projects along the Tamor River and its tributaries. Officials have announced that a total of 16 hydroelectricity projects are currently underway along the Tamor River alone, promising to generate a staggering 1,654.51 megawatts of power upon completion.
The Department of Electricity Development has revealed that the majority of these projects, precisely 14, are concentrated within the Phaktanglung Rural Municipality. Additionally, two more projects are situated in other local administrative units within the district.
Apart from the Tamor River, the focus on hydropower extends to the Mewakhola River as well. Four projects are currently in progress along the Mewakhola River, traversing the Mikwakhola Rural Municipality. These projects are anticipated to contribute 178.42 megawatts to the energy grid upon their operationalization.
Furthermore, the Kabeli River, another significant watercourse in the region, is witnessing the development of four hydropower projects. These initiatives are poised to generate an additional 95.43 megawatts of power, bolstering the district’s energy capacity significantly.
The surge in hydropower development underscores Taplejung’s commitment to harnessing its abundant water resources for sustainable energy production. As these projects progress, they not only promise to meet local energy demands but also contribute to the broader national agenda of achieving energy sufficiency and sustainability.
