Sixth National Conference on Climate Adaptation Concludes with Five-Point Declaration and Nine-Point Appeal

The Sixth National Conference on Climate Adaptation Based on Local Leadership concluded on Tuesday in Bardibas, Mahottari district, with a focus on climate justice and the urgent need for equitable policies to protect vulnerable communities from the effects of global climate change. The day-long event culminated in the issuance of a five-point Declaration and a nine-point Appeal, addressing the growing risks and advocating for robust climate adaptation measures.

The Declaration voiced concerns over the escalating impact of climate change across Nepal and called for immediate prioritization of climate adaptation programs to meet carbon emission reduction goals. The conference emphasized that current efforts to protect the lives and livelihoods of the most vulnerable populations remain inadequate, urging stronger initiatives from government agencies.

The conference also highlighted the importance of continued efforts and dialogue on adaptation measures under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

Chief Minister of Madhes Province, Satish Kumar Singh, inaugurated the conference, which brought together farmers’ groups practicing climate adaptation, social organizations, and local representatives. Singh underscored the importance of integrating climate adaptation practices into daily life and linking them with lifestyle changes.

Key Discussions and Appeal

The nine-point Appeal issued at the conference called for all stakeholders to adopt climate adaptation practices grounded in human-centric and climate justice principles. It stressed the need for interventions that address poverty and inequality in the face of the climate crisis, urging policies that focus on grassroots communities.

Participants also emphasized the need for a clear roadmap for Chure conservation to ensure the effectiveness of climate adaptation efforts. The conference featured in-depth discussions on working papers addressing the challenges of linking adaptation activities with poverty reduction, promoting a supportive policy environment, and aligning local adaptation efforts with global climate goals.

Expert Contributions

Researchers and experts, including Jagadish Bhatta, Suman Chapagain, and Sohan Lal Shrestha, presented key working papers. Ajaya Dixit and Prabin Man Singh, among other experts, provided feedback and additional insights.

Sunita Singh Budhathoki, Deputy Mayor of Mithila Municipality in Dhanusha, praised the conference for providing valuable insights into climate change impacts and ongoing adaptation efforts.

Joint Efforts for Climate Adaptation

The conference was jointly organized by 14 social organizations with extensive experience in climate adaptation and environmental conservation. These organizations aim to continue expanding climate adaptation programs across the country by focusing on poverty reduction, inequality, and climate justice at the community level.

This conference has set a critical agenda for climate action, calling for coordinated efforts to protect the most vulnerable populations from the worsening climate crisis.
