Students Protest Against Tuition Fee Hike at TU’s IoE

Students representing various student organizations have taken to the streets of Kathmandu to vehemently protest against the substantial increase in tuition fees for bachelor’s level programs at the Tribhuvan University Institute of Engineering (IoE).

The students orchestrated a resolute protest march that stretched from the Pulchowk Engineering Campus to the heart of Maitighar on Friday, sending a clear message of their dissatisfaction after the IoE’s decision to more than double the tuition fees.

This controversy stems from the IoE’s announcement, published just this Monday, regarding a significant escalation in the tuition fees for two prominent programs – Bachelor of Engineering (B.E.) and Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch.) – within its network of constituent colleges. This adjustment follows a decision that was reached on August 10.

The most striking alteration that has sparked the students’ ire is the staggering increase in the tuition fee for engineering programs. Formerly set at Rs 313,000, the fee has now been recalibrated to an astonishing Rs 775,420.

The students, backed by various student organizations, have united in their demand for an immediate and unconditional rollback of this tuition fee hike. Their collective voice reverberates in the heart of the capital, echoing their concerns about the accessibility of higher education and the potential repercussions of such a drastic financial burden on aspiring engineers and architects.
