Sudden Storm Capsizes Four Boats in China’s Guizhou Province, Leaving 10 Dead

A sudden storm struck a popular tourist destination in southwestern China on Sunday, capsizing four boats and claiming the lives of at least 10 people, Chinese state media reported on Monday.

The incident occurred on the upper reaches of the Wu River, a tributary of the Yangtze, in Guizhou province. More than 80 people were thrown into the river when strong winds, rain, and hail swept through the scenic area late Sunday afternoon, according to state broadcaster CCTV.

Initial reports had indicated that two tourist boats had overturned, but further investigation confirmed four vessels were involved. Two of the boats had no passengers, and all seven crew members aboard them managed to escape safely, CCTV noted. The remaining two boats were carrying tourists when the storm hit.

Video footage shared by state media showed rescue efforts underway, including a man performing CPR on another individual while a capsized vessel drifted nearby, its hull visible above the water.

The tragedy occurred during a five-day national holiday, when many Chinese citizens were traveling to scenic destinations such as Guizhou, known for its dramatic mountain and river landscapes.

In response, President Xi Jinping called for a full-scale rescue operation and emphasized the need to care for the injured and locate any remaining missing individuals. Seventy people were taken to nearby hospitals, most with minor injuries, according to Xinhua News Agency.

Xi also highlighted the urgency of enhancing safety protocols at tourist sites, crowded venues, and residential areas, especially during peak travel periods. He made note of a recent spate of deadly accidents, urging local authorities to strengthen preventative measures.

CCTV stated that the tourist boats had a maximum capacity of around 40 passengers each and were not overloaded at the time of the accident.

An eyewitness told Beijing News that the river was deep and difficult to navigate under the conditions, though some passengers managed to swim to safety. The storm reportedly arrived with little warning, and a dense mist quickly blanketed the water, hampering visibility and rescue efforts.
