Supreme Court Seeks Written Response from NC Leader Gagan Thapa in Contempt Case

The Supreme Court has ordered Nepali Congress General Secretary Gagan Kumar Thapa to submit a written response in connection with a contempt of court case filed against him.

A joint bench comprising Acting Chief Justice Sapana Pradhan Malla and Justice Nityananda Pandey issued the directive on Monday, citing concerns over potential interference with ongoing judicial proceedings.

Referring to Article 105 of the Constitution, the bench underscored the importance of safeguarding the integrity of the judiciary, stating, “Statements that could influence pending cases must not be permitted, as they may adversely impact the court’s impartial decision-making.”

The case stems from Thapa’s recent remarks regarding the handling of cases related to 52 constitutional office-bearers, which he suggested were being influenced or delayed at the apex court.

In response, Advocate Ananta Raj Luitel filed a contempt of court petition, arguing that Thapa’s comments undermined the authority and independence of the judiciary.

The court will proceed with further examination after receiving Thapa’s written clarification.
