Three-Tier Government Cooperation Stressed for Chure Conservation

Experts and officials have emphasized the need for strong coordination and cooperation among federal, provincial, and local governments to address the growing environmental degradation in the Chure region, particularly affecting the Madhesh districts.

Speaking at a dialogue organized by the Madhesh Province Ministry of Forest and Environment in Lahan on Monday, participants stressed that without unified efforts from all levels of government, curbing Chure’s degradation would be challenging.

Ministry Secretary Uddhav Bahadur Ghimire highlighted the direct link between the Chure region and livelihoods in Madhesh, underscoring the urgent need for conservation initiatives. He called for proactive leadership from local government chiefs to bring all stakeholders together in the conservation efforts.

Madhesh Province Forest Director Jagannath Prasad Jaiswal pointed to illegal exploitation of natural resources and deforestation as primary causes of groundwater depletion. He warned that delays in water recharge initiatives would further worsen the crisis.

Meanwhile, Binod Singh, Chief of the Division Forest Office in Dhanusha, presented an overview of ongoing conservation efforts in the Chure region.

The event was attended by officials from division forest offices in Dhanusha, Siraha, Saptari, and Udayapur, along with representatives of community forest users’ groups and local government leaders.
