Tourist Police to Be Deployed in Rara for Visitor Safety

The government has decided to station tourist police in the Rara area to enhance the safety of both domestic and international visitors.

The Department of Tourism and Chhayanath Rara Municipality have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to facilitate the deployment of tourist police in Rara, home to Nepal’s largest and deepest lake. The agreement was signed on Friday by Liladhar Awasthi, Director of the Department of Tourism, and Pashupati Shahi, Chief Administrative Officer of Chhayanath Rara Municipality.

As per the MoU, the Ministry of Culture, Tourism, and Civil Aviation, along with the Department of Tourism, will manage the recruitment, positioning, and deployment of tourist police in coordination with the municipality. Meanwhile, Chhayanath Rara Municipality will provide necessary infrastructure, including accommodation, drinking water, and electricity, to ensure a suitable working environment for the officers.

Rara is surrounded by religious sites, mountains, and caves, but tourists often feel uneasy exploring these remote locations alone. Authorities believe that the presence of tourist police will encourage visitors to explore the region more freely, ultimately leading to longer stays and increased tourism activity.

Acting Chief Administrative Officer Shahi stated that extended tourist stays would contribute to improving the local economy. Mayor Bishnu Kumar Bham added that preparations are underway to finalize the location for the tourist police, as well as to establish barracks and other essential infrastructure for their deployment.
