Tragedy Strikes as New Mother Succumbs to Cold in Quake-Ravaged Jajarkot

In a heart-wrenching incident, a new mother, identified as Sharmila Chadara, 25, hailing from Nalgad municipality-8 in Jajarkot district, lost her life due to cold exposure on Sunday night. The tragedy unfolds against the backdrop of the recent earthquake that shook the region, leaving a trail of devastation.

Sharmila, living with her one-month-old infant, found herself exposed to the harsh elements after her home was severely damaged during the earthquake that struck on November 3. The family, grappling with the aftermath, was compelled to take shelter under a tarpaulin sheet, leaving them vulnerable to the biting cold.

Tej Bahadur Singh, the chairperson of Nalgad-8, expressed the community’s sorrow over the unfortunate incident. He revealed that Sharmila’s struggle for survival in the aftermath of the earthquake was compounded by the bitter cold weather, ultimately leading to her untimely demise.

The earthquake, measuring 6.4 on the Richter scale, had its epicenter at Ramidanda in Jajarkot district, claiming the lives of 154 people and injuring 346 others. The disaster wreaked havoc on the region, with 26,557 private houses completely destroyed and 35,455 homes suffering partial damages.

Local authorities and relief agencies are urged to intensify efforts to provide immediate assistance to those affected, especially vulnerable populations such as new mothers and infants. The tragic death of Sharmila Chadara underscores the urgency of addressing the pressing needs of the quake-affected communities, emphasizing the importance of swift and effective relief measures.
