Tribhuvan University Bans Use of AI in Exams
Tribhuvan University (TU) has officially banned the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in exams, warning that any student found using AI will have their exam annulled. The decision was made during a meeting of the TU Exam Reform Committee on Monday, chaired by Rector Prof. Dr. Khadga KC.
The committee expressed concern that students are becoming overly dependent on technology, leading to a decline in reading habits and original thinking. The AI ban is aimed at curbing this trend and discouraging cheating during exams. Dr. KC emphasized that creativity and originality are key indicators of a student’s integrity, which is why the university has imposed the ban.
“Students’ reading culture is eroding, and cheating is becoming rampant,” Dr. KC explained, adding that the university issued a formal notice to discourage the misuse of technology in academic assessments.
In addition to AI, the use of digital devices such as mobile phones and smartwatches has been prohibited in exam halls, following reports of their misuse for cheating.
Meanwhile, in a separate announcement, TU has offered students who failed to complete their academic programs since 2058 BS and those in the semester system from 2069 BS another opportunity to sit for exams. This applies to students in the streams of humanities, education, management, science and technology, and law.
