UML Chair Oli Calls for High-Level Judicial Commission to Probe Gold Smuggling
The Chairperson of the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist-Leninist), KP Sharma Oli, has urged for the establishment of a high-level judicial commission to investigate the recent case of 100 kg gold smuggling. Oli emphasized that a thorough and impartial investigation necessitates the involvement of a judicial commission, cautioning against potential shortcomings in uncovering the true extent of the scandal if left solely to a parliamentary committee’s decision-making process.
Former Prime Minister Oli conveyed his stance during a press conference convened at the party office, underscoring that the complexity of the smuggling case and the potential involvement of individuals in influential positions require a comprehensive inquiry. He expressed skepticism about the possibility of such a significant gold smuggling operation occurring without the complicity of high-ranking individuals, further asserting that the illicit activities persist despite ongoing efforts to address the issue.
Addressing a separate matter, Chair Oli criticized the government’s arrest of lawmaker Sunil Sharma on alleged charges of possessing a fake academic certificate. He contended that this move was aimed at diverting attention from mounting protests against the government. Notably, the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist-Leninist) has been actively obstructing parliamentary proceedings, demanding the establishment of a high-level commission specifically tasked with investigating the gold smuggling case.
The call for an independent and authoritative judicial commission reflects growing concerns over the alleged involvement of influential figures in the gold smuggling operation. As demands for transparency and accountability intensify, the establishment of such a commission could potentially shed light on the intricacies of the case and ensure a thorough examination of the circumstances surrounding the illicit activities.
