UML Demands Home Minister’s Resignation
The main opposition party CPN-UML has called for the resignation of Home Minister Narayan Kaji Shrestha in connection with the ongoing gold smuggling scandal. During the House of Representatives (HoR) meeting held on Wednesday, UML Chief Whip Padam Giri expressed that an investigation into the gold smuggling case is imperative and asserted that Minister Shrestha should step down on moral grounds.
Giri also urged the Speaker to intervene and instruct the government to establish a high-level investigation committee to look into the matter. He further alleged that large quantities of gold are being smuggled into the country under the protection of high-ranking officials, including the Prime Minister, the Home Minister, and the Finance Minister.
In addition to CPN-UML’s stance, Nepali Congress lawmaker Sunil Sharma also demanded the resignation of Home Minister Shrestha and Finance Minister Prakash Sharan Mahat over their involvement in the alleged scam. Sharma further issued a warning, threatening to stage a hunger strike within the Parliament if the government fails to apprehend the key figure behind the gold smuggling racket.
