UML’s Hikmat Karki appointed as Chief Minister of Province 1

Hikmat Karki, the parliamentary party leader of the CPN-UML in Province 1 Assembly, has become the new Chief Minister of Province 1 Government.

Province Chief of Province 1 Parshuram Khapung appointed Karki as the chief minister as per Article 168 (2) of the Constitution of Nepal .

Karki on Sunday made a claim to government formation in Province 1.

A leader needs the support of at least 47 members of the 93-strong assembly to become appointed chief minister.

Karki solicited support from 60 lawmakers of the parties constituent of the federal ruling alliance, including 40 of the UML, 13 of the Maoist Centre, six of the RPP and 1 of the Janata Samajbadi Party (JSP).

After a meeting held on Sunday, the ruling coalition at the center decided to form a government in Province 1 under UML’s leadership.

Parliamentary party leader of Maoist Center Indra Bahadur Angbo was Karki’s proposer, while Bhakti Prasad Sitaula RPP and Nirmala Limbu of JSP were the seconders.

With the appointment, Province 1 becomes the first of the seven provinces to form a new government following the 2022 provincial elections.
