Upper Mustang Sees Over 4,000 Foreign Tourists in 2024, Marking a 14% Rise

Upper Mustang, a region famed for its unique landscape and rich cultural heritage, welcomed 4,061 foreign tourists in 2024, marking a 14.20% increase compared to the previous year, according to the Lomanthang office of the Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP).

Office Chief Umesh Poudel attributed the surge to improved road and transportation facilities, global recognition of the Annapurna Circuit Trek as one of the world’s top 10 tourism destinations, enhanced publicity efforts, and the establishment of luxurious hotels catering to international visitors.

The trend of increasing tourist arrivals has shown resilience despite recent global challenges. In 2023, the region hosted 3,484 foreign visitors, up from 3,112 in 2022. The COVID-19 pandemic led to a steep decline, with only 332 visitors recorded in 2021 and a mere 62 in 2020. However, the 2024 figure surpasses even pre-pandemic numbers, which stood at 3,918 in 2019.

Upper Mustang, with its captivating landscapes, ancient monasteries, and status as a restricted area requiring special permits, continues to attract adventurers and cultural enthusiasts from around the world. The Annapurna Conservation Area Project remains committed to balancing tourism growth with environmental preservation to ensure the region’s sustainability and appeal for years to come.
