Week-Long Exhibition of Ancient Chinese Paintings Kicks Off in Kathmandu

A week-long exhibition titled “Prime Years of Happiness: Exhibition of New Year Paintings” began in Kathmandu to mark the Chinese New Year. The event showcases 60 ancient Chinese New Year paintings, offering a glimpse into the cultural and historical life of late 19th-century Shanghai.
The exhibition was inaugurated on Friday by former Deputy Prime Minister and Nepali Congress leader Sujata Koirala, Deputy Chief of Mission at the Chinese Embassy in Nepal Wang Xin, Chancellor of Nepal Academy of Fine Arts Naradmuni Hartamchhali, Director of the Cultural Relics Department of Shanghai Ou Xiaochuan, and Director of the Shanghai History Museum Zhou Qunhua.
Speaking at the event, Sujata Koirala highlighted the importance of cultural diplomacy in strengthening Nepal-China ties. “This exhibition reflects a profound cultural heritage and the deepening relationship between our two countries,” she said, adding that the paintings exemplify the spirit of peaceful coexistence and mutual respect.
Chancellor Naradmuni Hartamchhali emphasized the role of cultural exchanges in fostering understanding and cooperation, noting that such exhibitions bridge knowledge of arts, history, and social life.
The opening ceremony also featured cultural performances by Chinese students, including calligraphy demonstrations and a rendition of the popular Nepali folk song “Resham Firiri.”
Organized by the Shanghai History Museum, Shanghai Municipal Administration of Culture and Tourism, and China Cultural Centre in Nepal, the exhibition is supported by the Chinese Embassy in Nepal and the Nepal Academy of Fine Arts.
Running until January 31 at the Nepal Academy of Fine Arts, the exhibition celebrates not only Chinese art but also the growing cultural and diplomatic relationship between Nepal and China. The event is part of a series of activities planned for 2025 to mark 70 years of Nepal-China diplomatic relations, coinciding with China’s support for the Nepal Visit Year.
