Why Did Madhav Nepal Flee Switzerland After Court’s Investigation Directive?

Former Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal has embarked on a journey to Geneva, Switzerland, shortly after a recent court order placed him at the center of an investigation into the Lalita Niwas land case, a matter of significant public interest.

Nepal, the Chairperson of the Unified Socialist party, embarked on his trip to Switzerland to participate in various events organized by Prawasi Nepali Ekata Munch across different countries, including Switzerland. The visit of the former prime minister to Switzerland amidst the escalating investigation has sparked curiosity and speculation.

Acknowledging the court’s order, Nepal’s secretariat has affirmed his awareness of the investigation. Moreover, his secretariat has emphasized the former Prime Minister’s unwavering dedication to ensuring impartial investigations into corruption and irregularities. He has been vocal about holding those responsible accountable and upholding the principles of good governance within the nation.

The timing of Nepal’s departure has raised eyebrows, leading to questions about the possible implications of his absence during a critical phase of the investigation. With Nepal temporarily stepping away from the political landscape, the responsibilities of the Unified Socialist party have been entrusted to Vice Chair Dr. Beduram Bhusal.

The Supreme Court’s directive, issued jointly by Justice Anil Kumar Sinha and Dr. Kumar Chudal, extends the scope of the investigation to encompass not only Nepal but also other policymakers suspected of involvement in the Lalita Niwas land grab case.

Addressing concerns surrounding Nepal’s absence, his personal secretary, Mohan Gautam, confirmed that the former Prime Minister is scheduled to return to Nepal on August 18. However, as the investigation continues to unfold and garner public attention, the circumstances surrounding Nepal’s departure remain a subject of intrigue and speculation.
