World Social Forum 2024 Commences in Kathmandu: Uniting Voices for a Better World

Today marks the commencement of the much-awaited World Social Forum (WSF) 2024 in the heart of the federal capital, Kathmandu, under the resonating theme “Another World is Possible.”

Originating in 2001 as a counterpoint to the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, the WSF has since been a pivotal platform for civil society organizations, social movements, trade unions, and individuals advocating against neoliberal globalization. Its roots trace back to the Global South, with inspiration drawn from events like the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

This edition of the WSF aims to tackle a spectrum of urgent global issues, including economic inequality, climate justice, labor rights, migration, caste discrimination, gender equality, peace, and sustainable development. It serves as a forum for dialogue and action, challenging the status quo and advocating for a more equitable and just world.

With over 1252 organizations from 92 countries participating both in-person and virtually, the five-day Forum promises a rich array of thematic panels, self-organized activities, cultural programs, and networking opportunities. It represents a significant milestone in the global solidarity movement, showcasing resilience and diversity.

The WSF 2024, amidst unprecedented global challenges, seeks to foster discussions, share experiences, and formulate strategies for a sustainable future, according to a press release from the Forum Nepal Organizing Committee.

The event kicks off with a Solidarity March at 10:00 am from the main venue, Bhrikutimandap, passing through Bhandrakali, New Road Gate, Ratna Park, and concluding back at Bhrikutimandap. The opening ceremony at Bhrikutimandap at 3:30 pm will feature a panel discussion with international speakers covering various themes and subjects.

Thematic panels, assemblies, and activities focusing on 13 different themes, including economic inequality, gender equality, labor rights, and peace, are scheduled throughout the Forum, culminating on February 19.

The WSF 2024 represents a beacon of hope and unity in addressing the world’s most pressing issues, signaling a collective commitment towards a better future for all. Stay tuned for updates and insights from this transformative event.
