Controversial Lawmaker Dhaka Kumar Shrestha Ousted from Parliament

Dhaka Kumar Shrestha, a then member of the Rastriya Swatantra Party, has been stripped of his position as a lawmaker.

The announcement was made by Speaker Dev Raj Ghimire during a session of the House of Representatives on Tuesday, effectively leaving the seat vacant.

On April 13, the Rastriya Swatantra Party expelled Shrestha from the party, citing his alleged involvement in unconstitutional and immoral activities.

During the House meeting, the Speaker relayed to the attendees that Shrestha’s lawmaker position had been revoked. This action was taken by the parliamentary party of the Rastriya Swatantra Party, as they had informed the parliament secretariat of their decision to expel him from their general membership in accordance with the Political Parties Act 2017.

The party had formally communicated to the Parliament Secretariat, requesting the removal of Shrestha from his position. According to Section 34 of the Political Parties Act, it is the responsibility of the parliamentary party concerned to inform the Federal Parliament Secretariat if a lawmaker has left the party or has been expelled.

The party has already nominated Bindabasini Kansakar as Shrestha’s replacement. This decision was made following Shrestha’s involvement in a corruption case, wherein a phone conversation between him and controversial businessman Durga Prasain was leaked to the public.
