Government’s Decision Challenged: TU Assistant Professor Seeks Justice, Files Writ Petition
Assistant Professor Prem Chalaune from Tribhuvan University (TU) has lodged a writ petition at the Supreme Court challenging the government’s decision to withdraw the case of attempted murder against his attackers. The petition was officially registered on Wednesday, marking a crucial step in the legal battle. Advocates Suraj Basnet, Sunita Raut Basnet, Swagat Nepal, Bharat Khadka filed the petition on his behalf. The petition aims to challenge the government’s decision and seek justice for the brutal attack he endured.
On October 6, 2020, TU Unit President of the Nepal Student Union (NSU) affiliated with the Nepali Congress, Hari Acharya, Secretary Yogendra Rawal, Rupesh Shah, Rabin Lama, Sahayuj Shrestha, Niraj Rana Magar, and Deepak Ojha mercilessly assaulted Chalaune. The case of attempted murder has been under trial at the Kathmandu District Court.
However, the Cabinet meeting held on June 13 has taken the decision to withdraw the case against Chalaune’s attackers. This controversial decision has now been conveyed to the Kathmandu District Court through the District Government Attorney’s Office, creating a stir within the legal system.
Expressing his strong opposition to the Cabinet’s decision, Chalaune has initiated a series of protests. Since Monday, he has been on a hunger strike on the premises of the TU vice-chancellor’s office, demanding justice and the reversal of the government’s decision.
