U.S. Expands Support for Nepal with New Aircraft Grants for Disaster Relief
In a continued effort to bolster bilateral ties and enhance disaster recovery capabilities, the United States has committed to providing Nepal with additional aircraft through three separate Department of State grants.
In 2021, the U.S. agreed to deliver two M28 Skytrucks to Nepal by January 2025. Valued at approximately $37 million, these short take-off and landing, fixed-wing planes include one dedicated air ambulance, the first of its kind for Nepal. The grant also covers training for pilots and maintainers, along with parts support.
Following this, in 2022, the U.S. committed to supplying Nepal with two Bell 412 helicopters, worth $44 million. This assistance includes pilot training, maintainer training, and logistical support, with delivery expected in the coming years.
During his recent visit, Deputy Secretary of State for Management and Resources Richard Verma announced a further commitment of $100 million in grant assistance. This additional funding will support the acquisition of more helicopters, training, and support equipment, pending congressional notification and availability of funds.
Both governments are collaborating closely to ensure that the aircraft are tailored to meet Nepal’s specific needs for disaster relief and recovery, reinforcing their commitment to effective and timely humanitarian assistance.
