Calls for Accessible Public Transport in Kathmandu Valley Lead to Push for Podway Technology

Accessible and reliable public transport is essential for any thriving city, yet residents of Kathmandu Valley continue to face challenges in accessing such services. Despite road expansions and various government initiatives, the public transport system in Nepal’s capital remains inadequate, leading to increased reliance on private vehicles, which has further exacerbated traffic congestion.

The rapid urbanization of Kathmandu Valley has led to a surge in population density, and with it, a rise in the use of private vehicles. However, public transport options have not kept pace, leaving citizens frustrated by long and congested commutes. While the government has taken steps to improve public transport, including attempts to introduce larger vehicles, these measures have not been effectively implemented.

The concept of a metro rail system was proposed as a solution to Kathmandu’s public transport woes, but it has stalled due to technical and financial challenges. In light of this, experts are advocating for the adoption of podway technology as a feasible alternative to alleviate traffic congestion and reduce the reliance on personal vehicles.

Podway, a modern technology based on cable systems, represents the latest advancement in public transportation, akin to a state-of-the-art cable car or train. The technology has garnered interest from local governments within the Kathmandu Valley, many of which have expressed their willingness to implement it.

Nil Bhattarai, Vice-chair of Kathmandu Podway, stated that efforts are underway to launch the podway system to provide accessible transport services to the people of Nepal. The initiative aims to address the shortcomings of the current public transport system. According to Bhattarai, the podway project has been included in the government’s policy, program, and budget for the current fiscal year.

Preliminary steps, such as requests for feasibility studies and the preparation of a detailed project report (DPR), have already been initiated in some areas. Bhattarai emphasized that the podway could be easily implemented within Kathmandu’s existing ring road if the government provides the necessary legal framework and permissions.

As Kathmandu Valley continues to grapple with its public transport challenges, the introduction of podway technology could represent a significant leap forward in making transportation more accessible, efficient, and sustainable for its residents.
