TikTok Removes Over 6,000 Videos Violating Community Guidelines in Nepal
TikTok has taken down 6,078 videos in Nepal over the past two months for violating its community guidelines. According to the platform’s representative, 99.1% of the videos were removed immediately after being flagged, while 93.2% were deleted within 24 hours.
The data was revealed during the ‘Digital Safety Summit Nepal,’ held in Kathmandu on Tuesday. The summit was organized by TikTok in coordination with Nepal’s Ministry of Communications and Information Technology.
Sidra Jalil, a TikTok representative, presented a working paper outlining regulatory guidelines prepared by the platform. Jalil emphasized the introduction of age-based criteria to promote a dignified and systematic user experience. Under these guidelines, users must be at least 16 years old to send direct messages and 18 years old to host live broadcasts.
Addressing concerns over improper use of social media, Jalil noted that the lack of awareness has led to instances of non-compliance with these guidelines.
TikTok’s Head of Public Policy and Government Relations for South Asia, Fordous Mottakin, reiterated the platform’s commitment to collaborating with the Government of Nepal to enhance digital literacy and ensure online safety.
Highlighting TikTok’s efforts, Mottakin stated that precautionary measures have been implemented to safeguard users, particularly children and youth, emphasizing the company’s focus on fostering a secure digital environment in Nepal.
The summit underscored TikTok’s broader goal of promoting responsible social media use and creating a safer online space for all users.
