NHRC Calls for Protection and Promotion of Migrant Workers’ Rights
On the occasion of International Migrants Day, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has urged the Nepalese government to invest adequately and implement legislative provisions to protect and promote the rights and welfare of migrant workers.
In a press statement issued today, the NHRC emphasized the need to address the challenges of labor migration through comprehensive policies and laws that ensure the safety and dignity of workers, particularly female domestic workers abroad.
“The Commission urges the government and all concerned stakeholders to take proactive steps for safe, regular, and orderly migration while also safeguarding the rights of female migrant workers,” stated Dr. Tikaram Pokharel, NHRC spokesperson.
The NHRC expressed its concerns over the current state of labor management and called for more effective mechanisms to manage and protect migrant workers. Despite the significant socio-economic contributions of migrant workers, the Commission noted that their rights continue to be compromised due to inadequate protections.
The Commission has been actively involved in promoting the rights of migrant workers through various initiatives, including monitoring human rights practices, conducting research, addressing complaints, and forging bilateral agreements with human rights agencies in migrant destination countries.
The United Nations estimates that there are around 281 million international migrants globally, representing 3.6% of the world’s population.
International Migrants Day, observed every year on December 18, highlights the contributions of migrant workers and raises awareness of the challenges they face. This year’s theme is “Honouring the Contributions of Migrants and Respecting their Rights.”
