646 Aftershocks Recorded Following 6.8-Magnitude Earthquake in Xizang

A total of 646 aftershocks have been detected as of Wednesday noon following the devastating 6.8-magnitude earthquake that struck Dingri County in southwest China’s Xizang Autonomous Region on Tuesday morning, the regional government announced.

The strongest aftershock recorded had a magnitude of 4.4 and occurred approximately 18 kilometers from the epicenter, according to Hong Li, head of the regional emergency management department.

The earthquake has resulted in 126 confirmed fatalities and left 188 people injured. In the aftermath, telecommunications, road access, and power supply have been fully restored in the affected areas, providing critical support for ongoing rescue and relief operations.

The Red Cross Society of China (RCSC) dispatched a second batch of relief supplies on Tuesday night, including 4,300 essential items such as cotton tents, quilts, and folding beds.

Additionally, more than 50 rescue workers were sent to the region by the RCSC. The team was equipped with emergency sanitary toilets, catering vehicles, and camper vehicles, ensuring that immediate needs for shelter, food, and hygiene are addressed.

Authorities continue to monitor seismic activity while providing aid and support to the affected communities.
