Spike in Viral Infections Strains Solukhumbu’s Health Services

A surge in viral infections has hit Solukhumbu district, with an increasing number of patients suffering from viral fever, common cold, cough, asthma, pneumonia, headaches, respiratory issues, and diarrhea. The rise in cases over the past week has overwhelmed local healthcare facilities.

According to the District Health Office, Phaplu Hospital is struggling to cope with the sudden influx of patients. The 15-bed hospital is currently accommodating over 50 patients, significantly exceeding its capacity. Hospital officials report that more than a dozen patients seek treatment for viral infections daily.

Sani Sherpa, the hospital’s officiating chief, stated that the growing number of cases has put immense pressure on available healthcare workers, creating difficulties in managing patient care. He added that most of the hospitalized patients are suffering from viral infections, forcing the hospital to deploy all available resources to meet demand.

Many patients arrive in critical condition, requiring oxygen support. Dr. Ram Babu Joshi of Phaplu Hospital noted that all hospital beds are occupied, with some viral patients being treated in the maternity ward due to space constraints. If the influx continues, he warned, patients may have to be treated on the floor due to the lack of available beds.

Health authorities are closely monitoring the situation as the outbreak continues to spread across the district.
