The World Food Programme (WFP) announced on Friday that over one million people in Myanmar will lose access to lifesaving food aid starting in April due to severe funding shortages.
The United States, previously a key donor, contributed $4.4 billion to the UN agency’s $9.7 billion budget in 2024, but international aid funding has been significantly cut under President Donald Trump’s administration.
Myanmar, which has been embroiled in a civil war since the 2021 military coup, faces a growing hunger crisis, with over 15 million people struggling to meet their daily food needs, according to the WFP.
“These cuts come at a time when intensifying conflict, displacement, and access restrictions are already pushing food aid needs to critical levels,” the agency warned in a statement.
