Agriculture Ministry Projects Rice Yield at 5.9 Million Metric Tonnes for Current Fiscal Year

Nepal’s rice production for the current fiscal year is projected to reach 5.96 million metric tonnes, marking a 4.04% increase compared to the previous year, according to preliminary estimates by the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development.

Dr. Matina Joshi Baidya, spokesperson for the Ministry, stated that despite a 1.28% decrease in the total land area under rice cultivation—1.42 million hectares this fiscal year—the average productivity has reached a record high of 4.19 metric tonnes per hectare.

“This year’s rice yield is a significant improvement, largely attributed to favorable weather conditions and advancements in agricultural practices,” said Dr. Baidya.

Province-wise data indicates that rice production has increased in Koshi, Madhes, and Sudurpaschim provinces. However, a decline in yield was observed in Bagmati, Gandaki, Lumbini, and Karnali provinces.

The Ministry emphasized the importance of sustaining and improving productivity levels to ensure food security and bolster the agricultural economy. Further assessments and final figures are expected in the coming months.
