Avalanche in Manang Hinders Movement, Raises Safety Concerns

An avalanche struck Dhukurpokhari in Ngisyang Rural Municipality of Manang district, disrupting local movement and posing risks to residents and tourists alike.

While the avalanche did not completely block the roads, it has significantly impeded trekking routes to upper and lower Mustang, making travel challenging.

Subash Kumar Lamichhane, Chief District Officer, reported that the upper regions of the district experienced heavy snowfall on Sunday night, exacerbating the situation. Although road access remains open, trekking in the higher elevations has become arduous.

“Dhak Bahadur Bhujel, the district chief of the Annapurna Conservation Area Project, expressed concerns over the safety of tourists in the affected area,” Lamichhane stated. Despite the avalanche, the influx of tourists to Manang has commenced, with approximately 50 to 60 visitors arriving daily.

Bhujel emphasized that tourists have been informed about the potential risks associated with the avalanche, ensuring their safety remains a top priority amidst the ongoing challenges.
