Bhotekoshi River Flood Sweeps Away Person, Dozens of Buildings in Khumbu Region
In a devastating incident on Friday afternoon, a sudden flood in the Bhotekoshi River swept away a person and destroyed several houses and public buildings in the Khumbu region. The flood, which struck Thame in Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality-5, has left one person missing, though their identity has yet to be confirmed, according to the District Police Office.
Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Dwarika Prasad Ghimire reported that the flood washed away six houses, five hotels, a school, and a clinic. Additionally, seven other houses in the area are now at high risk due to the disaster. The flood, which is believed to be a result of a glacial lake outburst above Thame, occurred without any preceding rainfall, further raising concerns about its sudden and unexpected nature.
Both the Nepal Army and Nepal Police have been deployed to the disaster site to assist in rescue and relief efforts. Fortunately, the floodwaters are now receding, allowing for better access to the affected areas.
DSP Ghimire mentioned that an investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the flood, which is suspected to be a flash flood triggered by the glacial lake outburst.
