BJP Returns to Power in Delhi After 27 Years, AAP Defeated; Congress Draws a Blank Again

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has secured a historic victory in the Delhi Assembly elections, returning to power in the national capital after 27 years. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) suffered a significant defeat, with several of its top leaders, including former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, losing their stronghold seats.
The verdict reaffirms BJP’s growing political dominance, coming just months after its victories in Maharashtra and Haryana. The Congress, which once ruled Delhi for 15 years, failed to win a single seat again, continuing its electoral drought.
BJP won 45 out of 70 seats and was leading in three more, while AAP secured 21 seats and was ahead in one constituency. Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed the victory as a triumph of good governance, promising to transform Delhi’s infrastructure and improve the quality of life for its residents. He expressed gratitude to the people of Delhi, stating that the party would work tirelessly to fulfill their aspirations. Union Home Minister Amit Shah also thanked voters, emphasizing their trust in BJP’s governance model.
Apart from Kejriwal’s loss in New Delhi to BJP’s Parvesh Verma, several senior AAP leaders suffered defeat, including Manish Sisodia in Jangpura, Saurabh Bhardwaj, Somnath Bharti, Satyendra Jain, Awadh Ojha, and Durgesh Pathak. However, Atishi retained her seat in Kalkaji, defeating BJP’s Ramesh Bidhuri, while Gopal Rai secured victory in Babarpur. Former AAP leader Kailash Gahlot, who joined BJP before the elections, won from Bijwasan.
Accepting the results, Kejriwal congratulated BJP and assured that AAP would continue to serve the people as a constructive opposition. He acknowledged the party’s achievements in health, education, and infrastructure over the past decade and reiterated its commitment to public service.
The Congress, which had aimed for a revival in Delhi, once again ended up without a single seat, mirroring its performance in the last two assembly elections.
The election process culminated with counting on February 9 after polling on February 5. With BJP now in charge, significant shifts in Delhi’s governance and policy direction are expected as the party aims to consolidate its control over the capital.
