Kathmandu, Dec 4: Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense, Purna Bahadur Khadka, embarked on a diplomatic mission to Ghana last night to participate in the United Nations Peacekeeping Ministerial. The annual conference, organized by the United Nations, is set to convene in Accra, the capital of Ghana, from December 5-6.
In his capacity as the representative of Nepal, Deputy Prime Minister Khadka is leading the Nepali delegation at the conference. The event comes at a crucial time when peacekeeping missions are confronted with unprecedented challenges.
The Ministerial agenda encompasses critical topics such as the protection of civilians, strategic communications, addressing misinformation and hate speech, ensuring safety and security, promoting the mental health of peacekeepers, and enhancing the role of women in peacekeeping operations.
Representatives from member nations contributing to international peacekeeping will present commitments from nine different sectors supporting peacekeeping efforts. The conference will also provide a platform to discuss the problems and challenges faced by peacekeeping missions, along with proposed solutions.
Deputy Prime Minister Khadka is scheduled to address the conference on behalf of Nepal, highlighting the country’s steadfast commitment to global peacekeeping endeavors. Meanwhile, other members of the Nepali delegation will actively participate in various sessions to contribute to the discussions.
On the sidelines of the conference, Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations, Atul Khare, and Jean Pierre Lacroix are slated to pay a courtesy call on Deputy Prime Minister Khadka. Additionally, DPM Khadka is expected to engage in bilateral discussions with the Ministers for Defense and Security from other countries.
The trip holds significance as it is anticipated that Nepal’s substantial contributions to international peacekeeping will be discussed and acknowledged, further enhancing the country’s global image. The high-level delegation, led by Deputy Prime Minister Khadka, has been accorded special importance in the conference program, designating him as a speaker on behalf of member nations, as communicated by Khadka’s secretariat. This participation underscores Nepal’s commitment to promoting international peace and security.
