Dev Gurung Accuses NC-UML Alliance of Trying to Regress Nepal

CPN-Maoist Center General Secretary Dev Gurung has voiced apprehensions regarding the recent alliance between the Nepali Congress (NC) and CPN-UML, alleging that their collaboration aims to roll back the country’s progress through constitutional amendments. Speaking at an interaction in Kathmandu on Wednesday, Gurung expressed grave concerns that discussions around constitutional amendments under the pretext of forming a new coalition government could jeopardize the hard-won achievements of the nation.

Gurung firmly stated that any attempt to revert to the 1990 Constitution would signify regressive and backward steps for Nepal. Amid ongoing efforts to establish a national consensus government under the leadership of the Maoist Center, Gurung accused certain political factions of engaging in disruptive maneuvers and clandestine agreements reached under cover of darkness.

Highlighting specific concerns, Gurung cautioned against potential arrests linked to pending legislation on transitional justice and the unresolved Bhutanese refugee case. He underscored the necessity for any governmental formation to strictly adhere to constitutional provisions, emphasizing that withdrawal of support from the current administration would necessitate the Prime Minister to seek a vote of confidence in the House.
