Did Prachanda and Oli Plan to Improve Government Functioning?

The top leaders of the ruling and main opposition parties have intensified their political meetings and discussions. The recent flurry of activity among these leaders over the past three days has stirred considerable interest within political circles. This increased activism is being closely watched by the public, who speculate about potential changes in the government. However, the leaders themselves have refrained from making any explicit statements on the matter.

Today, Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ and CPN (UML) Chairperson KP Sharma Oli engaged in a discussion. It is said that they talked about running the government more effectively. Talks on contemporary political situation of the country figured in the meeting held at the Office of Prime Minister at Baluwatar today morning, besides discussing making government functioning more effective, said Manohar Timilsina, communication expert of Prime Minister Dahal.

It may be noted that PM Dahal and Oli, whose party is one of the coalition partners in the incumbent government, had also held a meeting on Sunday. Also present in that meeting was Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Home Affairs Rabi Lamichhane. The leaders discussed contemporary political issues, according to a member of Dahal’s secretariat.

On Saturday, Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba held discussions with UML Chairman Oli at his residence in Balkot. This has raised speculation about potential shifts in the balance of power.

However, it is said that Deuba attended a meeting because Chairman Oli was unwell. No official details about the discussions between Oli and Deuba have been released to the media.

“The meeting was scheduled at Deuba’s request,” said a UML leader , emphasizing that such meetings between leaders are routine. He dismissed any immediate changes in the power dynamics, adding, “The UML supports the current government’s continuity. There’s nothing further to report.”

Nepali Congress, the largest party in the House of Representatives, is currently in opposition. The CPN-UML, the second-largest party, is part of the government led by Pushpa Kamal Dahal, the chairperson of CPN (Maoist Center) – the third-largest party in the House of Representatives.
