Eight Candidates Lose Deposits in Bajhang-1 By-Election

In the recent by-election for the Bajhang-1 (A) seat of the Sudurpashchim Province Assembly, eight out of eleven candidates forfeited their election deposits, failing to secure the required 10% of the total votes. The election, held under the first-past-the-post (FPTP) system, saw Damodar Bhandari of CPN-UML emerge victorious with 11,612 votes, followed closely by Abhishek Bahadur Singh of the Nepali Congress with 11,346 votes.

Janak Budha of CPN (Maoist Center) finished third with 3,831 votes. According to the Province Assembly Election Act, 2017, candidates needed at least 2,971 votes to retain their deposits. Dil Bahadur Singh of CPN (Unified Socialist) narrowly missed this mark, garnering 2,514 votes.

The list of candidates losing their deposits includes Kishor Khadka of Rastriya Prajatantra Party, Ram Bahadur Jagri of Janata Samajbadi Party, and several independents: Gajendra Bahadur Thapa, Deepak Bahadur Khadka, Suhila Devi Bista, Khagendra Bahadur Shahi, and Kamal Ghari Magari.

The by-election results reflect the political dynamics and voter preferences in the constituency, with a significant number of candidates unable to meet the required threshold to secure their deposits.
