Election Commission Urges Adherence to Code of Conduct Ahead of By-Elections
With the by-elections for the House of Representatives in Ilam-2 and the Provincial Assembly in Bajhang 1(1) scheduled for April 27, the Election Commission (EC) has issued a stern reminder to all stakeholders regarding the importance of complying with the Election Code of Conduct. Violations of this code, designed to ensure the integrity and fairness of the electoral process, will be met with legal repercussions, cautioned the EC.
In a press note released on Tuesday, the EC emphasized that the Election Code of Conduct remains in effect until the completion of the election procedures. Any infractions, especially those involving the misuse of social media platforms to disseminate misleading or fake information, propaganda, or derogatory remarks, will be dealt with decisively.
According to EC Spokesperson Shaligram Sharma Paudel, the EC is particularly vigilant regarding activities on social media platforms that have the potential to negatively influence the election atmosphere. Actions such as creating and operating fake accounts or sites, spreading propaganda, and making unwarranted derogatory remarks are strictly prohibited under the code.
Additionally, any distortion of information or content aimed at influencing the election outcome, as well as tagging such content to individuals, is deemed unacceptable. The EC has empowered district code of conduct monitoring committees, headed by the district’s Chief Election Officer, to swiftly address any violations.
In a proactive measure, the EC is establishing a social media monitoring unit within the Commission to promptly identify and address unwanted actions. This unit will recommend appropriate actions against violators of the Code of Conduct, ensuring the integrity of the electoral process.
Furthermore, the EC has decided to collaborate with the Press Council Nepal to promote responsible media coverage conducive to creating a reliable, safe, and impartial atmosphere for the election. This entails discouraging negative or misleading content related to the election and taking swift action against such materials to uphold the sanctity of the electoral process.
