Fire Incidents Surge in Nepal, Leading to Significant Losses and Displacements
With the onset of the summer season, Nepal has witnessed a sharp increase in fire and forest fire incidents, leading to substantial human and financial losses, and displacements across several districts. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) reports that within just 10 days from April 13 to April 23, approximately Rs 115.51 million in losses were incurred due to these fires, coinciding with the Nepali New Year.
According to NDRRMA, out of the total losses, Rs 112.52 million were due to fire-related incidents while forest fires contributed Rs 2.99 million to the financial toll. The country also recorded 279 fire incidents in this period, with 208 general fires and 71 forest fires. These unfortunate events led to the loss of five lives and injuries to 21 individuals. The fires also resulted in the displacement of 486 families and the death of 190 animals, including 137 due to fire and 53 to forest fires.
The districts of Achham, Rupandehi, and Kapilvastu have been identified as the most affected by these fires.
Forest fire expert Sundar Sharma emphasized the persistent risk of more fires, especially forest fires, due to continued dry conditions and lack of rainfall. “We have seen a significant increase in fire incidents in recent years, with 2021 being particularly devastating. The same could happen this year if we do not receive sufficient rainfall soon,” Sharma warned. He also noted the accumulation of dry shrubs and the prevalence of pine trees as major contributors to the escalation of these incidents.
Sharma urged the public to remain vigilant against potential fire hazards, particularly in forested areas.
The NDRRMA is closely monitoring the situation and coordinating with local authorities to enhance fire prevention and response strategies, aiming to mitigate further losses and ensure the safety of the populace as the dry season continues.
