Flood Disrupts People’s Movement Above Namche, Solukhumbu

People’s movement above Namche in the Solukhumbu district has been severely disrupted following a flood in the Thame rivulet on Friday. The District Police Office in Namche reported that the flood has cut off the crucial tourist route from Phakding to Namche, effectively disconnecting the lower belt from the Everest region.

Deputy Inspector of Police Hem Bahadur Katwal stated that the flood caused significant damage to the trail between Phakding and Namche, with 100 meters of the path being washed away in two locations. This has resulted in the disruption of traffic from Lukla to Namche, the main gateway to the Everest base camp.

The only footpath leading to the Everest trail has been blocked after the Bhotekoshi river eroded the route, making access to the region extremely difficult.

The flood also devastated Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality-5, washing away 20 houses, hotels, a health post, and a school. A joint team of the Nepali Army and Nepal Police has been actively involved in rescue operations. Deputy Superintendent of Police Dwarika Prasad Ghimire reported that 93 people were rescued from Thame and have been provided shelter in a house behind the Army camp, while another 42 individuals are taking refuge in a local community building.

The authorities are working to assess the full extent of the damage and restore access to the affected areas.
