G20 Summit: Delhi Prepares for High-Stakes Event with Stringent Security Measures

In anticipation of the forthcoming G20 Summit scheduled for September 9-10 in New Delhi, the city is gearing up to host the high-profile international event under India’s presidency this year. The summit holds immense significance for India’s global geopolitical influence, as well as its strategic interests in economics, defense, and security. To ensure the smooth conduct of the summit and the safety of attendees, comprehensive security measures have been put in place, along with the declaration of a public holiday from September 8 to 10.

Public Holiday Extends to Government, Private, and Commercial Sectors

As a part of the preparations for the G20 Summit, a public holiday has been officially announced in the National Capital Territory of Delhi. This holiday period, from September 8 to 10, encompasses various sectors:

All government offices, institutions, educational establishments, corporations, and statutory bodies under the jurisdiction of the Delhi government will remain closed during this time.
Private offices, educational institutions, and all other private establishments within the National Capital Territory of Delhi are also included in the public holiday.

Commercial banks and financial institutions located within the purview of the New Delhi Police District, as defined by Section 25 of the Negotiable Instruments Act 1881, will observe the public holiday.

Moreover, all shops, commercial entities, and businesses within the jurisdiction of the New Delhi Police District will remain closed during the G20 Summit.

Security Arrangements and Measures

Given the significance of the G20 Summit and the participation of various heads of states and foreign delegations, extensive security arrangements have been devised to ensure a safe environment. Some key aspects of the security measures include:

Strict sealing of all borders of the national capital to prevent any unauthorized entry during the summit.

Normal vehicular and public movements will be allowed, with special attention given to potential disruptive groups or individuals.

A substantial deployment of 60 deputy commissioners of police (DCPs) has been organized. These DCPs will oversee security arrangements at the summit venue, Pragati Maidan, as well as at the airport, designated hotels hosting dignitaries and delegates, and other key locations.
DCPs will also manage security at places to be visited by the spouses of state heads, traffic routes, and other crucial areas.

Continuous vigilance will be maintained to prevent any unlawful gatherings, identify and restrain potential disruptive elements, and maintain the overall security of the city.
The police force will actively monitor social media platforms to track any inflammatory content or misinformation being circulated.

An enhanced police presence will be visible across the city, with particular attention to malls, markets, monuments, and places of worship. Quick response teams, commando units, and special vehicles (Vikrant) will be deployed strategically.

Comprehensive contingency plans have been devised to ensure emergency medical care in and around hospitals.

Parking regulations will be strictly enforced, and all agencies, including Delhi Police, will adhere to the rules.
