Government Issues Travel Advisory for Nepalis Heading to Thailand, Cambodia, and Other Countries

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued a travel advisory for Nepali citizens planning to travel to Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia, and Laos, urging them to exercise caution, particularly those traveling for foreign employment.

The advisory, issued on Monday, emphasizes the increasing reports of Nepali nationals falling victim to human trafficking and exploitation by criminal syndicates in these countries. The Ministry highlighted that these racketeers often lure individuals with promises of high salaries, only for them to face severe conditions, such as employers confiscating passports, forcing long working hours (12 to 13 hours a day), subjecting workers to physical abuse, and withholding wages.

In light of these dangers, the Ministry has urged Nepali nationals to avoid engaging in illegal activities, which are punishable under law. The advisory specifically recommends that Nepali workers do not travel on a visit visa for employment purposes. Instead, they are advised to ensure they receive sufficient information about potential employers and foreign companies through the relevant Nepali missions abroad.

Additionally, the Ministry has urged travelers to personally verify the legitimacy of employers and agencies by checking their websites before accepting any employment offers. This step aims to protect Nepali citizens from falling prey to exploitation and illegal activities abroad.

The government continues to prioritize the safety and welfare of Nepali nationals working overseas, particularly in countries with reported risks.
