Government’s Attention Drawn to Significant Losses in Thame, Solukhumbu
The government’s attention has been drawn to the significant losses suffered in Thame, located in Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality-5 of Solukhumbu District, following a devastating flood. The incident occurred around 11:30 am on August 16, causing widespread damage in the region.
In a session of the National Assembly today, lawmaker Krishna Bahadur Rokaya highlighted the gravity of the situation, stating that 20 houses, one medical clinic, and a school building were swept away by the flood. Additionally, one person has gone missing, and numerous other houses have been inundated. Rokaya called on the government to intensify search and rescue operations immediately.
The flooding is believed to be a result of the outburst of Khumbu Glacier Lake, which has raised concerns about the potential risks posed by the lake. Rokaya urged the government to conduct thorough research into the incident and to take preventive measures against future risks.
During the session, lawmaker Rukmini Koirala also expressed concerns over the disaster, emphasizing that the flood had affected the Dudhkoshi River as well. She called for an official report and detailed data regarding the incident, noting that the disaster is likely a consequence of climate change and demanding an official statement from the government.
Similarly, Gopi Bahadur Sarki Achhami urged the government to address the flood in Thame, stressing that mountain settlements in geographically volatile zones are at increased risk due to continuous monsoon rains. He advised the government to implement a rehabilitation plan for citizens residing in vulnerable areas.
Earlier in the session, other members, including Jayanti Devi Rai, also emphasized the urgency of relocating the people of Thame to safer areas to prevent further loss of life and property.
