Health Ministry Advises Caution as Heat Wave Strikes Tarai Region
With temperatures soaring across the Tarai region, the Ministry of Health and Population has issued a warning to the public to adopt preventive measures against the intensifying heat wave. The phenomenon has been associated with a variety of health risks, including accelerated heartbeat, respiratory problems, low blood pressure, excessive sweating, severe headaches, dizziness, and nausea.
Dr. Bimal Chalise, Chief Consultant at the Shukraraj Tropical and Infectious Disease Hospital, highlighted the vulnerability of Tarai settlements to the detrimental effects of the heat wave. “High temperatures can severely impact the brain, and prolonged exposure can lead to dehydration, affecting vital organs such as the kidneys and heart,” Dr. Chalise explained.
To combat the risks associated with the heat wave, health authorities have recommended several precautionary measures. Dr. Chalise advises the public to stay hydrated by drinking ample water and consuming hydrating foods like fruits and cucumber. Taking cold showers, using an umbrella, wearing light cotton clothing, and covering the head with a thin cloth while outdoors are also suggested.
Residents are encouraged to limit outdoor activities to the cooler morning and evening hours, avoiding the midday sun when temperatures peak. The health ministry also advises against spending prolonged periods in the kitchen, as well as avoiding smoking and the consumption of alcohol, caffeinated beverages, and sugary sodas during the heat wave.
These precautions aim to mitigate the health impacts of the heat wave currently affecting the Tarai region and ensure the safety and well-being of the local populations during this challenging period.
