Heatwave Hits Terai-Madhes: Daily Life and Health Severely Affected

Residents of Terai-Madhes are facing severe disruptions due to extreme temperatures that have soared to between 38 and 42 degrees Celsius over the past week. The scorching heat has significantly impacted daily activities, with bustling marketplaces becoming deserted by afternoon and noticeable declines in attendance at government offices.

Local doctors have reported an increase in health issues, particularly among children, the elderly, and those with compromised immune systems. There has been a noticeable rise in cases of wounds, measles, typhoid, fever, and diarrhea. Health experts are also warning about the increased risk of heatstroke, especially for those engaged in manual labor and outdoor activities during peak heat hours.

Moreover, the heatwave is affecting local agriculture, with reports of drying vegetable plots and cornfields. Seasonal crops such as mangoes, litchis, and various green vegetables have also suffered due to the harsh conditions.

In response to the rising temperatures, there has been a spike in the demand for cold beverages as residents try to find relief from the heat.

Authorities are advising the public to stay hydrated, avoid direct sunlight during the hottest parts of the day, and seek medical attention for any heat-related illnesses.
