HoR Session Halted Amid UML Protests

The ongoing session of the House of Representatives (HoR) was marred by further obstruction as lawmakers from the CPN-UML intensified their protests on Friday. The main opposition party, CPN-UML, voiced their demands by resorting to shouting slogans and encircling the well of the assembly, causing significant disruptions to the proceedings.

In a parallel development, the CPN-UML raised strong objections against the recent arrest of Nepali Congress (NC) lawmaker Sunil Sharma. During the HoR session, Jwala Kumari Shah, a lawmaker from CPN-UML, passionately protested against Sharma’s arrest. Shah highlighted that Sharma had been actively advocating for the establishment of a high-level investigative committee to probe the alleged gold smuggling case.

The Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) of Nepal Police took MP Sunil Sharma into custody, adding to the mounting tension. By Friday morning, the CIB had apprehended a total of 8 individuals, including lawmaker Sharma, in connection with the case. The CPN-UML lawmakers reiterated their demands throughout the proceedings, emphasizing the necessity of a government-formed high-level committee to thoroughly investigate the alleged 100-kilogram gold smuggling operation.

As the disruptions escalated and the chaotic scenes persisted, Speaker Devraj Ghimire was left with no option but to adjourn the HoR meeting. The session is now set to resume on Monday, with hopes that the situation will be calmer and more conducive to meaningful legislative proceedings.
