Illegal Gold Seized at TIA; Sri Lankan National Arrested
In a significant operation, airport security at Tribhuvan International Airport thwarted an attempt to smuggle illegal gold, seizing a total of 1 kilogram and 300 grams. The operation, led by the airport’s security chief, DIG Arjun Chand Thakuri, targeted a Fly Dubai flight arriving in Nepal during the early hours of Sunday morning.
The illicit cargo was traced to a Sri Lankan national, whose identity has not been disclosed yet. The suspect was apprehended by security personnel immediately upon arrival. Preliminary investigations suggest that the individual was attempting to smuggle the gold into the country through deceptive means.
DIG Arjun Chand Thakuri addressed the media, emphasizing the airport’s commitment to maintaining stringent security measures. He stated, “Our vigilant security personnel successfully intercepted the illegal transportation of gold, demonstrating our dedication to combating smuggling activities at the airport. The collaborative efforts of our team led to the timely arrest of the suspect.”
Authorities are now conducting a thorough investigation to determine the origin and intended destination of the confiscated gold. The Sri Lankan national is currently in custody and will face legal proceedings for violating customs and immigration laws.
