Indian Embassy Honors Singer Menuka Poudel
In a heartening celebration of women’s achievements and empowerment, the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu bestowed honors upon renowned singer Menuka Poudel on the occasion of International Women’s Day. The program, which took place on Wednesday, witnessed the Deputy Chief of Mission at the Embassy of India in Kathmandu, Prasanna Shrivastava, alongside Anuradha Koirala, the esteemed founder of Maiti Nepal, honoring both Poudel and 81-year-old Ratna Kumari Sunuwar for their inspiring accomplishments.
Menuka Poudel’s name resonates within the realms of music, her talent having garnered recognition both in Nepal and India. Her recent accolade at Indian Idol 2023 stands as a testament to her exceptional skill and dedication. Joining her in the limelight was Ratna Kumari Sunuwar, whose determination and perseverance led her to pass her Grade 12 exams at the remarkable age of 80, shattering stereotypes and proving that learning knows no bounds of age.
The commemoration of International Women’s Day, held at the premises of Maiti Nepal, was an amalgamation of honor, appreciation, and celebration. Under the themes of “Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress” and “Inspire Inclusion,” the event aimed to shed light on the extraordinary contributions of women to society.
The presence of Ashta Lakshmi Shakya, Nepal’s first woman Chief Minister, as the Chief Guest added further gravitas to the occasion. Shakya’s leadership and advocacy for women’s rights underscored the importance of collective efforts towards gender equality.
The event witnessed a confluence of dignitaries, including political leaders, representatives from various social organizations, students from Maiti Nepal, and women from diverse backgrounds. Deputy Chief of Mission Prasanna Shrivastava commended Maiti Nepal for its relentless efforts in championing the cause of women’s welfare and prosperity. He particularly lauded Anuradha Koirala, highlighting her prestigious ‘Padma Shri’ award from the Government of India in 2017 as a testament to her unwavering commitment.
Ashta Lakshmi Shakya echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the symbiotic relationship between India and Nepal and advocating for sustained efforts towards women’s empowerment. Anuradha Koirala shared insights into the myriad initiatives undertaken by Maiti Nepal, expressing gratitude for the continued support from the Embassy of India.
In a gesture of solidarity and support, the Embassy of India presented books to the students of Maiti Nepal, emphasizing the importance of education in empowering women.
The celebratory mood was further enhanced by mesmerizing musical performances by women instrumentalists from Kathmandu and cultural presentations by the talented girl students of Maiti Nepal.
