Indian Railways Explores New Routes via Nepal and Bangladesh to Connect North East

In a bold move aimed at bolstering connectivity to India’s North East region, the Indian Railways has embarked on comprehensive studies to establish railway routes through neighboring Nepal and Bangladesh. This strategic initiative aims to circumvent the geographically sensitive Siliguri corridor, enhancing both efficiency and security in the region’s transportation network.

According to a report published in The Hindu Business Line, the Railway Board has approved the final location survey for 14 new railway routes, which will establish crucial connections with Nepal and Bangladesh. The proposed routes include over 200 km of new lines within Nepal, approximately 500 km of new connections with Bangladesh, and a gauge conversion covering 367 km.

One of the key projects outlined involves the construction of a 190 km railway line linking Biratnagar in Nepal to New Mal in Jalpaiguri district of West Bengal. Additionally, plans include a 12.5 km new railway line from Kajali Bazar in Jhapa to Bhadrapur, extending further to Galgalia in Eastern Bihar, facilitating smoother cross-border transport across the Mechi River.

This ambitious endeavor is expected to significantly reduce travel time and logistical challenges, further integrating the North East with the mainland. The initiative underscores India’s commitment to regional connectivity and economic growth, fostering closer ties with neighboring countries through enhanced infrastructure.

Railway authorities have expressed optimism regarding the timely implementation of these projects, which are poised to transform transportation dynamics in the region.
