India’s Lok Sabha Elections – 7 Phases, Kick Off on April 19, Results on June 4!
Chief Election Commissioner of India, Rajiv Kumar, has unveiled the dates for the eagerly awaited Lok Sabha elections today. The polls are slated to be conducted in 7 phases, commencing from April 19 and concluding on June 1. The results are scheduled to be declared on June 4. Notably, simultaneous polls will not be held, as clarified by Kumar.
Furthermore, assembly polls for various states have also been announced. Andhra Pradesh will go to polls on May 13, Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh on April 19, and Odisha on May 13.
Addressing the press, the Election Commission emphasized its commitment to combatting the 4Ms – muscle, money, misinformation, and MCC violations – to ensure free and fair elections.
Approximately 97 crore eligible voters are gearing up to exercise their democratic right in the upcoming polls. Notably, voters aged over 85 will be facilitated to cast their votes from home. Additionally, the Election Commission has assured the provision of basic facilities such as drinking water and toilets at all polling booths.
It’s imperative to note that the present Lok Sabha’s tenure concludes on June 16, necessitating the constitution of a new House before then. Similarly, the tenure of four state assemblies also ends in June.
In the backdrop of the last parliamentary polls where the BJP clinched 303 seats, the upcoming elections hold immense significance. With the BJP eyeing a third consecutive term, the Opposition bloc, led by the Congress, is gearing up to challenge the ruling party’s dominance.
