International Marathon to Raise Awareness for Red Panda Conservation

An International Marathon is set to be organized on September 21 to raise public awareness for the conservation of the endangered Red Panda. The event, organized by the Himali Conservation Forum, will coincide with Red Panda Day and aims to draw attention to the critical need to protect this vulnerable species.

Runners in the marathon will cover a challenging 48-kilometer route through the Pathibhara area, a key habitat for the Red Panda. The route starts from Phungling Bazar, ascending 24 kilometers to the Pathibhara shrine at an altitude of 3,794 meters, before returning 24 kilometers back to Phungling Bazar.

Ramesh Rai, Program Coordinator for the Himali Conservation Forum, emphasized that the marathon is expected to make a significant contribution to the conservation of the Red Panda. He noted that preparations for the event are already underway and highlighted its potential to boost both tourism and biodiversity in Taplejung.

The marathon is part of broader efforts to raise awareness about the plight of the Red Panda, whose population continues to face threats from habitat loss and poaching. The event is anticipated to attract participants and supporters from around the world, furthering the cause of conservation in the region.
