Jhapa District Expands Healthcare with New Municipal Hospitals
Jhapa district has seen significant advancements in healthcare infrastructure, with 12 out of its 15 municipalities establishing their own hospitals, each equipped with a minimum of 15 beds. These municipal hospitals now provide essential services, including emergency care, maternity services, laboratory testing, and ultrasound facilities.
In addition to these municipal hospitals, a dozen private-sector hospitals with capacities exceeding 15 beds operate across the district. These facilities range from provincial hospitals to the B&C Hospital, which is licensed to operate a medical college. Larger private hospitals in the district also offer advanced services such as MRI scans.
Among the municipalities, Mechinagar, Kankai, and Gauradaha have fully operational hospitals, while Buddhashanti, Haldibari, Kamal, Barhadashi, Jhapa, and Gaurigunj rural municipalities offer medical treatment through basic hospitals. Damak, Birtamod, and Arjundhara municipalities have equipped hospitals that cater to patients from both within and outside their areas. Primary health centers are currently operational in Kachankabal rural municipality and Shivasatakshi municipality, with plans underway to upgrade these centers into full-fledged hospitals.
Bhadrapur Municipality is home to a well-equipped provincial hospital, while Birtamod, Damak, Mechinagar, and Kankai municipalities boast large private hospitals. Additionally, the municipality’s primary hospital in Dhulabari has been upgraded to offer enhanced services, including 24-hour emergency care, maternity services, ultrasound, ECG, and laboratory facilities. Four MBBS doctors are now stationed at the hospital to provide comprehensive medical care.
Agni Prasad Adhikari, the Chief Administrative Officer of the municipality, highlighted the recent upgrades, stating, “The municipal hospital has been brought into operation to provide services through four MBBS doctors. We are committed to offering 24-hour emergency services, including maternity, ultrasound, ECG, and lab services.”
In Mechinagar-10, three hospitals—one government-run, one community-based, and one private—serve the local population. Among these, Mechi Amda Hospital operates as a community hospital, while the 15-bed Shikhar Hospital is privately run.
These developments mark a significant improvement in healthcare accessibility for the residents of Jhapa, ensuring that essential medical services are available closer to home.
