KMC Arranges 374 Beds for Helpless at 52 Hospitals

The Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has taken a significant step towards supporting helpless and poor individuals by arranging 374 beds across 52 hospitals for their free treatment.

Private hospitals are mandated to allocate a minimum of 10 percent of their beds and provide free treatment to the helpless and indigent as per KMC’s edict. This initiative ensures that those in need can access essential healthcare services without financial burden.

Dhanendra Shrestha, a public health inspector at KMC’s health department, reported that since the scheme’s launch in February, 70 patients have already benefited from the program. Interestingly, the majority of these patients come from outside the capital city.

The KMC introduced the free treatment work procedure 2080 in response to private hospitals failing to comply with existing legal provisions. This procedure is now being strictly enforced to ensure that the healthcare needs of the most vulnerable are met.

In addition to arranging free treatment, KMC has implemented a system where the availability of beds, treatment services, and other healthcare schemes at private hospitals can be checked online. This system is designed to enhance transparency and accessibility for those in need.

Patients benefiting from this initiative are receiving treatment for a variety of conditions. Shrestha noted that many patients are suffering from ear, nose, and throat (ENT) problems, kidney disease, respiratory issues, and eye problems. Some patients have already been discharged after successful treatment, while others are still undergoing care.

To facilitate access to information and services, KMC has set up a hotline (1180) that individuals can call to learn about available treatments and services under this program.

This proactive measure by KMC reflects a strong commitment to healthcare equity and the well-being of its residents, ensuring that no one is left without necessary medical care due to financial constraints.
