KMC Launches Ambitious Teacher Training Program to Elevate Government School Education

In a progressive move aimed at enhancing the quality of education in government schools, the Kathmandu Metropolitan City is set to embark on a comprehensive training program for over 2,000 teachers. The initiative, slated to commence this week, is anticipated to bolster teaching standards, elevate learning outcomes, and foster enhanced competency among students.

According to Shailendra Jha, a member of the City Planning Commission, the training regimen, spanning four days, will be conducted at 55 centers and facilitated by esteemed professors and experts from Kathmandu University. This initiative follows the successful training of 39 teachers, with 34 educators achieving accreditation for their commendable performance. Encouragingly, the metropolis will sponsor accredited teachers to pursue master’s degrees at Kathmandu University, further nurturing their professional development.

Jha emphasized that enhancing the capacity of government school teachers is integral to the metropolis’ broader strategy to augment educational quality. In addition to investing in infrastructure and digital learning, the Kathmandu Metropolitan City has forged a strategic partnership with Kathmandu University. The collaboration entails initiatives such as teacher capacity building, research on effective teaching methodologies, and child psychology studies, with a significant financial commitment of over 28 million.

Beyond traditional pedagogy, the metropolis is pioneering innovative approaches to education. “Book-free Fridays” have garnered widespread interest, providing students with optional short-term courses ranging from agriculture and urban farming to cosmetology and mobile repair. Furthermore, an integrated curriculum for grades 1 to 3 fosters interdisciplinary learning, while extracurricular activities including music, poetry, and gardening promote holistic development among students in grades 4 to 8.

In a bid to share best practices and expertise, trained teachers expressing interest will have the opportunity to support educational endeavors in other local federal units during vacations. This collaborative ethos underscores Kathmandu Metropolitan City’s commitment to fostering a dynamic and inclusive educational ecosystem, ultimately empowering students and educators alike.
